There was a time not so long ago when Americans, regardless of their political stripes, rallied round their president. Once elected, the man who won the White House was no longer viewed as a Republican or Democrat, but the President of the United States. The oath of office was taken, the wagons were circled around the country’s borders and it was America versus the rest of the world with the president of all the people at the helm.

Suddenly President Barack Obama, with the potential to become an exceptional president has become the glaring exception to that unwritten, patriotic rule.

Four days before President Obama’s inauguration, before he officially took charge of the American government, Rush Limbaugh boasted publicly that he hoped the president would fail. Of course, when the president fails the country flounders. Wishing harm upon your country in order to further your own narrow political views is selfish, sinister and a tad treasonous as well.

Subsequently, during his State of the Union address, which is pretty much a pep rally for America, an unknown congressional representative from South Carolina, later identified as Joe Wilson, stopped the show when he called the President of the United States a liar. The president showed great restraint in ignoring this unprecedented insult and carried on with his speech. Speaker Nancy Pelosi was so stunned by the slur, she forgot to jump to her feet while clapping wildly, 30 or 40 times after that.

Last spring, President Obama took his wife Michelle to see a play in New York City and republicans attacked him over the cost of security for the excursion. The president cant take his wife out to dinner and a show without being scrutinized by the political opposition? As history has proven, a president in a theatre without adequate security is a tragically bad idea.

Remember: Apart from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?

At some point, the treatment of President Obama went from offensive to ugly and then to downright dangerous. The health-care debate, which looked more like extreme fighting in a mud pit than a national dialogue, revealed a very vulgar side of America. President Obamas face appeared on protest signs white-faced and blood-mouthed in a satanic clown image. In other tasteless portrayals, people who disagreed with his position distorted his face to look like Hitler complete with mustache and swastika.

Odd, that burning the flag makes Americans crazy, but depicting the president as a clown and a maniacal fascist is accepted as part of the new rude America.

Maligning the image of the leader of the free world is one thing, putting the presidents life in peril is quite another. More than once, men with guns were videotaped at the health-care rallies where the president spoke. Again, history shows that letting men with guns get within range of a president has not served America well in the past.

"(Rush Limbaugh's wishing) harm upon your country in order to further your own narrow political views is selfish, sinister and a tad treasonous as well." Mr Thomas contends…

And still the birthers are out there claiming Barack Obama was not born in the United States, although public documentation proves otherwise. Hawaii is definitely part of the United States, but the Panama Canal Zone where his electoral opponent Senator John McCain was born? Nobody’s sure.

Last month, a 44-year-old woman in Buffalo was quite taken by President Obama when she met him in a chicken wing restaurant called Duffs. Did she say something about a pleasure and an honour to meet the man or utter encouraging words for the difficult job he is doing? No. Quote: You’re a hottie with a smokin little body.

Lady, that was the President of the United States you were addressing, not one of the Jonas Brothers! He’s your president for goodness sakes, not the guy driving the Zamboni at Monster Trucks On Ice. Maybe next it’ll be, Take Your President To A Topless Bar Day.

In President Barack Obama, Americans have a charismatic leader with a good and honest heart. Unlike his predecessor, he’s a very intelligent leader. And unlike that presidents predecessor, he’s a highly moral man.

"Given the opportunity, Canadians would trade our leader, hell, most of our leaders for Obama in a heartbeat."

In President Obama, Americans have the real deal, the whole package and a leader that citizens of almost every country around the world look to with great envy. Given the opportunity, Canadians would trade our leader, hell, most of our leaders for Obama in a heartbeat.

What America has in Obama is a head of state with vitality and insight and youth. Think about it, Barack Obama is a young Nelson Mandela. Mandela was the face of change and charity for all of Africa but he was too old to make it happen. The great things Obama might do for America and the world could go on for decades after he’s out of office.
America, you know not what you have.

The man is being challenged unfairly, characterized with vulgarity and treated with the kind of deep disrespect to which no previous president was subjected. Its like the day after electing the first black man to be president, thereby electrifying the world with hope and joy, Americans sobered up and decided the bad old days were better.
President Obama may fail but it will not be a Richard Nixon default fraught with larceny and lies. President Obama, given a fair chance, will surely succeed but his triumph will never come with a Bill Clinton caveat if only he’d got control of that zipper.

Please. Give the man a fair, fighting chance. This incivility toward the leader who won over Americans and gave hope to
billions of people around the world that their lives could be enhanced by his example, just naturally has to stop
Believe me, when Americans drive by the White House and see a sign on the lawn that reads: No shirt. No shoes. No service, they’ll realize this new national rudeness has gone way, way too far.

Well thank you William Thomas for your unbelievable ability to have selective memory loss, to cheer on neo-socialist-progress crapola, and last but not least your inability to come to grips with reality…

The ‘circle the wagons’ crapola you’re trying to foist off apparently didn’t apply to the dim-witted but thoroughly seditious Democrats when George W Bush was in office…

Regarding Rush’s comments if you had taken the time to delve into them is the fact that Rush DID NOT WANT this parasitic loser Obama’s excessivly expensive agenda to succeed…

Your whine: “The health-care debate, which looked more like extreme fighting in a mud pit than a national dialogue, revealed a very vulgar side of America”…

This is only true if one’s understanding of even the most basic economics are less than nil…

Your bit of drivel here is yet another attempt by a looney LIBTARD to rationalize why a clueless, useless, but completely socialist swine has some sort of right to defile the Oval Office…

juandos–while i agree that politics has been getting less civil and becoming more of a spectacle, i think you’re more of an accessory to it rather than a rational commenter on it.

it seems to have taken on a new ferocity with the formation of Fox News in 1996 and the subsequent viciousness of the attacks on Clinton; this was followed by left-wing attacks on the dim-witted Bush (whose election was itself suspect), and it has carried over and increased with the controversial election of a black, socialist, kenyan, maoist, nazi. Your vitriolic attack of Mr. Thomas and Obama and defense of Rush Limbaugh only shows that you’re part of the problem. the economics of healthcare showed that we couldn’t keep going down the road we were on–all of us just one medical emergency away from bankruptcy and foreclosure, with 45 million uninsured and an infant mortality rate below Cuba’s. referring to Obama’s agenda as excessively expensive after 8 years of Bush leading us into economic collapse is ignorant on your part as well as–perhaps–Mr. Limbaughs; the rest of your comments are mostly ad-hominem, so i won’t address them.

The comment made by “juandos” shows just how spot-on this article is. I am an American who supports our democratically-elected Commander in Chief, and the current state of politics in my country is shocking to any reasonable person here. Unfortunately, the reasonable people are not those garnering attention in the media (with the exception of satirist Jon Stewart’s recent “Rally to Restore Sanity). The violent, extremist right-wing can no longer be dismissed as the “fringe.” I live in the state of Florida, where a (now-confirmed) representative screamed into a microphone, “If ballots don’t work, bullets will.” Unfortunately there wasn’t anyone standing there with the sense to yell “TREASON!” I remember only 2 years ago when President Bush would have given that person a one-way ticket to Guantanamo Bay. Now, in his effort to appear bipartisan, President Obama lets these egregious sins slide. I am constantly being called names, from Nazi to Communist, because I support the new health care laws. There is no reasonable debate– There is no debate; only slander, misinformation, and lies. Thank you for this insightful article. I hope that my country will stop succumbing to fear and panic, and remember what being an American requires above all: Respect for each other, our leaders, and our partners across the globe.

Dear Juandos, The vituperative nature of your response to Mr. Thomas’s basic chastisement of the US for lack of respect for The Office of The Presidency as is presently filled by a man who was Elected to that office by an overwhelming majority of Americans, goes to prove, not only that Mr. Thomas is right in everything he said, but that you, sir, have neither the integrity, the decency or the intelligence to begin to comprehend what you have in the right to say what you have said.
I, myself will go, perhaps, too far by suggesting that the reason President Obama is treated in such a despicable manner, with flagrant, constantly encouraged behavior never inflicted upon any previous President, is because old, cranially lethargic men, who listen to the mud-slingers of this world, like Rush Limbaugh, are Angry because The President of The United States of America is half White!
And because you are so afraid, so full of hate, you are willing to watch the Country and therefore, the World go up in flames; it is easier to be angry than it is to think and question and CHANGE.
I wonder what Christ would think of you, sir.
I, myself, have only a kind of sad, sour, pity for you.

    Mr. Thomas,
Thank you for the article. I can add a few more instances of ugly behavior that I or an acquaintance have observed first-hand, being American citizens in the Midwest. My niece works in a bank. In December after Barak Obama’s election, a customer walked up to one of her co-workers, who is black, and made an indirect verbal threat to the new President. It was obviously rehearsed and deliberately directed at her. All of the employees at her workplace were upset and disgusted by the incident. The hate-mongering by Glenn Beck, Limbaugh, etc., has driven emotional divisions down to the neighborhood level. I have been a witness to that. We have broken off ties with one family in our neighborhood after the gentleman and his wife furiously brought up “talking points” they had picked up from these programs and others to us. This was after we had made it very clear, several times, that we did not want to engage in political talk. We simply don’t talk religion or politics with family or neighbors. I remember back to President Dwight Eisenhower. Being a young Catholic girl in a mid-sized southern town in 1960, I remember the suspicions of the first Catholic president, John Kennedy. I remember Nixon’s disgrace and the way he was portrayed in cartoons, and his being lampooned by the Smothers Brothers, mildly, but I also remember that he misused the Justice Department and kept an enemies’ list. But I do not remember anything like the vitriole directed at this President. The intensity of this accusation-name-calling-false issue cycle is partly because of the vast numbers of social media through which people communicate now. But it is also because of that most basic of human emotions, fear. Because fear is easy to incite and easy to keep going when people have lost their jobs or their homes, or think that they will. So please be assured, Mr. Thomas, that there are Americans who do not engage in this kind of behavior and who are as appalled by it as you are, if not more so. In fact, there are a lot of us. We just happen to be quieter. And we are standing up when we think it is appropriate, in ways that we think are appropriate, through contact with our representatives in Washington and through communications like this. Once again, I really appreciate your article.

Please do ignore juandos’ comments: he represents much of what is wrong in America these days: he is inarticulate, ill-informed, and ill-mannered.
I agree that many of Limbaugh’s comments do border on treason (they are certainly seditious), and he would have absolutely pilloried anyone who said the VERY same things while Bush was in office! Hypocrisy is alive and well in the right wing.
Thank you for your well-written observations. While I may be disappointed in many of President Obama’s actions, he is still our president, and deserves the honor due that office. I agree with you that he is a very intelligent, principled man and, despite the crazies who try to paint him as ‘left of Jesus’ (hmm, do the wingers realize yet that Jesus was an uber-liberal?) and as Satan personified, I think history will view him as a very capable, very CENTRIST leader.
You are also correct in pointing out the VERY dangerous turn that a lot of the wingers’ rhetoric has taken. I only hope and pray that none of the crazies who are being whipped into a lather by Limbaugh, Beck, and others of that ilk will go too far and harm our president.
Oh, and THANK YOU for pointing out that Senator McCain was born in Panama. The Senate passed a resolution confirming that McCain was a “natural born citizen”; if there had been ANY need of a similar affirmation of Mr. Obama’s legitimacy as a candidate, would not the Senate have passed a similar resolution? Birthers=imbeciles.
Please do realize that roughly half of Americans agree with what you have written; we are indeed still sane, still reasonable, and still absolutely baffled as to how these (willfully) ignorant, over-indulged scoundrels (like Limbaugh, Beck, Boehner, etc.) gained such a loud voice in our country. Perhaps we should have been more careful to keep the Fox out of the henhouse?

As a non-partisan, multiple-magazine owner with a University degree, two decades of professional media and journalism experience, as well as a mixed bag of relationships in the political world from General H. Norman Schwarzkopf to Nancy Pelosi, this article intrigued me. It was intriguing mainly because as a patriot and lover of this country, I feel The Office Of The Presidency should always be respected, period. I was also frustrated that I hadn’t covered this topic yet. Kudos to William Thomas.

    In any event, during these last two decades, I have periodically witnessed the left and the right display inexcusably abhorrent disrespect for The Office of The Presidency for many terms. This disturbing fact has always repelled me from the party spewing the assault. My common-sense position is simple;

You can dislike the person, disagree with the politics, vote against the proposals, but you must respect the Office Of The President…

…anything less is hypocritical, unpatriotic and dangerous. Once the candidate becomes The President, our actions as an American society continue to set an example to governments, societies, and others at home and abroad.

The point it, any mature individual can effectively communicate discontent without using harmful and undermining disrespect, particularly politicians and high-profile people in the media.

    With that said, I would like to share the wonderfully well written editorial by Mr. Thomas, and add a few points where I take issue. (It should be noted that a few decisions over the last five elections did not yield the President I voted for. Nonetheless, on the day of every inauguration, I personally vowed to respect The Office Of The President, period. I may not have agreed with things… I may have editorialized for or against some policies, Presidents or people… but I always respected The Office. All Americans should. It’s one of the things I think I regularly get right.) Here is the article, with my interjections;

All of you moronic twits (that’s you, juandos) who have disparaged the truth spoken in Mr. Thomas’ article are indeed treasonous American Idiots. Your anger is spewing out of your pours like fire from Hell. Your lack of facts and reason are akin to your lack of brain matter and education, and your foolish comments are laughable, in the sense that one must laugh to keep from crying. You will also need to quit lying when you say it’s “not a race thing”, as we all know very well that it is. President O’Bama is the new SOUTHERN STRATEGY for you people, and until you accept the facts and quit denying your own personal bigotry, you are nothing more than what your own Lee Atwater referred to you as about 30 years ago: the extra chromosome republicans. So get your teeth fixed, move out of the trailer park, unglue your eyes from FUX News, and move into the real world. After looking at things from an objective birds-eye view instead of the hateful, unintelligent tunnel vision you currently have, then maybe we can talk. Then maybe you will have some credibility. At the moment, you have NONE.

There is certainly some selective nostalgia going on here. This is not the first time that American presidents have been vehemently publicly opposed – just look at what Bush went thru (deservedly or not). The truly alarming thing about this presidency is that if you disagree with him or say you don’t like him, you are immediately called a racist by his fans. As if that is the only reason you would dislike him or oppose his policies. This IMO is what makes this one of the most divisive administrations that I can remember – perhaps since Johnson.

The American People have Spoken and his days in office are numbered. He is now a LAME DUCK. It is going to take 20 plus years to un do what this idiot has done. We will out live the Obama administration, but the trouble lies with the stupid people who elected him. The Civil War has begun. @ Jerry Genschorck: Thank you for your comments. They serve, in both form and content, to illustrate the very problem that is explicated in this article. Your apparent lack of concern for syntax or orthography also serve to tell the world exactly where you’re coming from . . . thank you for being so honest.
However, I do believe your concern for the future of our country is misplaced. If the nation is able to survive the mistakes of the previous administration, it’s likely we’ll survive this one as well.

I just want to say that not all Americans agree with Rush nor do all Americans agree with the rudeness you have been subjected to through the comments left here as well. My hope is that we can come together and work to the good of this country and leave it in better shape for our children. The truth of the matter is there are a lot of people that are only looking at the now and not thinking about what will eventually be passed down to our children. Which I can see our President, Obama, is working so hard to do.

Thank you for your incredible article. I, like Lindsey, live in the State of Florida, where Floridan have just elected a governor who, while being investigated for fraud, pleaded the 5th more than 100 times. Coupled with a Lt. governor-elect from my city, who is also being investigated for fraud. Solid Republicans, both of them. We were lucky to survive Jeb Bush and Charlie Crist. I didn’t think it could get any worse but voila! From bad to “Are you kidding me?” No one elected after George W. Bush could possibly be successful. The man left our country in a shambles. Our President is indeed an American, born in this great country of ours. It’s about time Americans elected a President who represented the rest of the country, not just the establishment. Wake up people. Glen Beck and others like him should be boiled in oil. I for one, am proud to be an American under our current leadership.

The fact that we all have the time to post a response, either in agreement or disagreement, on the moot opinion of a foreigner is an example of a pure waste of time, but I digress.

The fact is that corruption and bad politics exist on both sides of the isle. What is ridiculous to me is that some are so blinded by which side they are on, and whether their side wins some fantasy competition, they cant see that the truth lies in the middle. The facts are that no system is perfect, and that anytime 2 people are placed in a room together, there will be opposing views. Sure, the majority of the electorate voted Barack into office, but what does that have to do with healthcare? The disturbing fact is that after after all the empty chatter about transparency and working together, the bill was pushed through despite half of america objecting to it.

America’s disdain for the current administration is not personal and it isn’t about healthcare; its about a government that doesn’t consider the desire of their constituency. Healthcare as an example, after the commander and chief realized there was nearly a 50/50 split and if he really cares about the people and being a public servant, why didn’t just take a step back, take a deep breath, forget about his agenda, and come to resolution that more of the public could agree on. Only he can answer that… Americas current situation is based its entire history, every administration played a role.

There are extremist people on both sides, some will use any opportunity to act like a fool. But in general we are all just people to, in one big pool. Stop thinking you are always right, start giving way to the fact that IT IS OK IF SOMEONE THINKS DIFFERENT THAN YOU, and love each other, even if it hurts!

Imagine, a society where intersections are blocked not because a selfish person ran the red light and killed someone else, but blocked because people were fighting over who would let the other go first. We have lost sight of what it means to be Americans, the selfish mentality needs to be destroyed, but only you can do that. COME ON AMERICA – WAKE UP!

  19. Brad Gosser Avatar

Thanks, Joe. It’s refreshing to hear someone speak from somewhere outside the tangled commotion of blind rage, ignorance, confusion, and fear that has become the voice of our nation. The United States has become a parody of itself, and it is my belief that the only real threats to our survival as a nation stem from our becoming a society that is itself unable to function without those special accommodations that only rich parents can afford for their terminally handicapped children who secretly embarrass them in front of their neighbor–you know, the neighbor with a smaller house, less vehicles, and a big clean backyard with lots of trees…we call him “Mister C”…

Anyway, here’s another reasonable point to add to the above comments on this article. So far, analysis of Mr. Obama’s policies hasn’t moved beyond the bickering that most of us agree is such a waste of time. That is simply because they are so new that we haven’t had time to see whether or not they work. Therein lies the reason behind the fact that those who oppose the president do not rely on sound arguments, but on emotionally charged rhetoric. Here’s how I imagine the health care agenda as reasoned out by our new president:
“Hey, the old health care system run by corporate giants was economically inefficient and it left way too many people with no access to health care. So we need to get a bill passed in spite of the elected lobbyists that occupy Congress and the media, and it’s gonna piss them off no matter how we do it. So come whatever shitstorm may, we have to make some changes for the good of the American people.”
Anyone paying attention to this while it was happening knew that Obama’s approval rates would go down whether the new legislation was realized or not. He knew this, but I think he had enough faith in the results to hang on for a rough ride. It’s still too early to tell whether or not he’s put us on the best road, but it is difficult to imagine how turning from the direction our country was heading under the neoliberal health care system could not have been a good decision.
